Photographic plates

The approximately 2'000 photographic plates feature images of diatoms, both in full view and in detail, some of which were used as illustrations in Friedrich Meister's publications. Most of these plates are negatives, but positives were made from about 200 of the negatives.

Each photographic plate is labelled with a number, which is occasionnally supplemented by letters. In some instances, multiple plates of the same type with identical labels were recorded in the same entry. However, it is sometimes unclear whether plates with the same numbers but different letter suffixes belong together, which is why they were recorded separately. For lower-numbered positives, the labels correspond to that of the original negatives, but this correspondence does not hold for higher numbers.

Information is rarely inscribed on the photographic plates themselves; the labelling is often found only on the paper wrapping. Additional details, such as the taxon and the corresponding microscopic slide, are typically recorded only in the notebooks.
